Change size of center Orb?

Post by DORN »

Is there a way to make the center orienting Orb larger?

In the stock cockpit # 2, it looks like there is room for the orb to be about 15 to 20% larger.

It sure would help for situational awareness.

The Radar globe Marvin.

 I think I know what you mean ... and I think you can bring it closer. Instructions can be found in the Customizing Kit's ReadMe.

well, almost..

...the 18th value in guages.txt supposedly has something to do with size. I tried different values but all I got were smaller radar orbs.

I feel a bit stumped.

Use negative numbers to move it back closer to you.

I got a cockpit mod that moved the displays to a place rather far away, and harder to read. So I moved em back and adjusted the orb. Now its like a holographic hud display!

Would you mind describing what you did to really bring that orb forward?

Thanks,

When I use a negative number in position 18 of guage.txt, (eg: -0.25), the orb dropped down in the display space rather than grew bigger.

Also, because the orb dropped down, the position circle that is supposed to be inside of the orb, was no longer inside of the orb.

I would like to keep everything centered in the display space, but just have it all 15 to 20% larger filling up all of t he space available for this display.

Any ideas?

In addition to moving it back, you'll likely need to increase the Y value as well. When you change those values, you are adjusting the orb's position in 3D space, so you'll need to account for the height also. I'd suggest starting with increasing the height of the orb at the same value you move it back with. So if you apply a value of -0.5 for distance, apply 0.5 to increase its height. It will take some testing to get the placement where you want it, but those adjustments should provide the size change you're after.

VERY INTERESTING.

Line 12 = 0.19
Line 18 = -0.52

I got the Orb larger, and I got it centered. I can really see things now and the tails on targets are very, very visible.

But...

the orb is a little too big to fit in the window.

Is it possible to expand the window size so that the internal graphics will fit, now?

There seems to be room on the control panel for a larger window size.

Depending on conditions (3D cockpit enabled/disabled, custom design, etc), you can usually move the display surface also to match the radar's position. See the kit for details.

The cockpit is the 3D Stock shaders cockpit with hex hud mod.

I read the kit but I don't know what the parts are called that I would need to alter, or how to alter them.

Is it by any chance the 3D Radar Display Screen Texture / ccpitblue1?

Also, I don't want to move the display surface, I would like to make it larger by about 15%. How do you do that?

Yes, ccpitblue1.png is the texture for the radar display. You can adjust that slightly if the scaling isn't too different. Otherwise, you'll need to move the display surface itself, just like you did with the radar sphere itself. In the gauges.txt file, it's lines 4 (vertical) and 15 (distance) that you'll want to modify.

Change size of center Orb?

Post by DORN »

Hello there,

I took a break from my experimenting with numbers. Both Orb and Background are correctly adjusted for elevation. I was going to post the numbers but...

The Orb, although you can see the whole thing, only shows targets that are in front of you.

(The background is just right, filling up all the available space. And both are correctly oriented with each other.)

I am thinking that the Orb is going to have to be a bit smaller to show all targets.

Well... here is where I am at the moment. In the next few days I will experiment with getting the Orb and Targets all showing.

I am assuming that the Orb is only showing front targets because it is too far forward/large. I wish I could keep it the size I have it, but maybe that won't work???

Okay, here it is. The Sweet Spot.

The Orb is about 30% larger on a larger Dispay background. That was as large as I could get it and still have all targets display. Everything is aligned.

This is for the Stock 3d cockpit.

If you want to experiment further, (I think it may still be possible to increase size of Orb and Display background a bit); compare the Sweet Spot guages.txt to the guages.txt in my previous post. It will give you an idea of the increments I used to get the Sweet Spot. It does not take much.

Thanks to all for the help!
