Multiplayer + Mods = ... :(

Post by Turbo123 »

Okay so in short I have the Steam version of EM. I understand how to install Mods and can get them to work, But only in Single Player. When I try and connect with something like the Hex Hangar Blue or ENB or the Nebulae it will either freeze forever when I click a multiplayer server or some will let it load and go into different % then crash with an error that is normally associated with the files. (For instant the HD Nebulae)

I have tried to just install the mods manually, Then reinstalling, and even going so far as to use "JSGME Generic Mod Enabler". Sooo am I doing it wrong? Some mods will work in multiplayer like the HQ Civilian Ships mod.

The required memory conditions can change when you switch to multiplayer and some mods can consume a lot of memory far beyond what the default media requires. So it could simply be that your system is just running lean on memory when you switch to multiplayer and the mods are pushing it over the limit of available RAM. Couple of things to check/try:

- Make sure you're not running any of the programs Steam lists as potential inteference problems for their program/service or at least make sure they have the required 'gaming mode' settings applied ( https://support.steampowered.com/kb_art ... -SFLZ-9289 ). Running Steam + Game + resource blocking/consuming A/V/security software + high resource mods may be exceeding the memory limits available on your system.

- Try running the game directly without Steam running at the same time (by launching the game from the install folder directly). See if the behavior changes as it may change the memory profile/limit being used. If this works, then it's probably just a matter of freeing up some memory resouces so everything can run the way you want. Another solution might be to manually reduce the media sizes in some of the mods you are using to lower the memory overhead.

- Use the steps/information available here to test for changes: http://www.starwraith.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6595

Well here is my system,

AMD FX-8120
16GB Ram
Radeon 6850 2GB
1TB with around 100GB left
Windows 7 x64 - Administrator Account

I highly doubt it could be my systems specs. I do have AVG and disabling it doesn't fix it so I guess... I can uninstall it, I mean, I will try that but I am doubtful. I will report back on my findings.

Thanks for the help!

Hi Turbo,

I had the same problem and my system has good enough specs that it should have been running fine. After I went through all the trouble-shooting steps I finally found a fix with Large Address Aware... check out this forum link:

http://www.starwraith.com/forum/viewtop ... 53#p126035

It's a programme that allows your system to access more memory for specified applications. It isn't recommended for every system so read it carefully and decide for yourself. For me it works perfectly and I am able to use heavy mods in multiplayer.

Right, it isn't necessarily how much memory your system has installed, but how much it is allowing a game or program to use. The percentage at which the game closes can provide an estimate on where your system is denying the game memory it is requesting:

0-30% Image loading sequence - > ~300-400 MB
30-50% Building universe sequence - > ~400-600 MB
50-80% "" - > ~600-700 MB
80-90% Loading ship data sequence - > ~700-800 MB
90-100% Cockpit and Initializing - > 800-900 MB

There can be a number of factors that can restrict/limit a consecutive block of memory available to the game, so the steps at the link I posted provides several possible solutions.

Okay boy has EM really kicked it up in kicking me in the bottom... Here is some real strange info,

I uninstalled my Anti Virus (AVG) and don't have any "conflicting programs" running. I deactivated all mods and reinstalled, YET the game crashed @ 34% in SP and MP... I have restarted BEFORE uninstall, after uninstall, after reinstall... Still crashing. I have ran the game as administrator and even in Win XP SP3 compatibility. Still nothing, So the game seems to hate me... :(

(I also deactivated the Large Address Aware)

Something could have simply corrupted one of the game files when it was loading (like trying to perform a scan on it while the game was trying to access/load the file(s)). Try this, launch the game, load a profile, then at the main menu, immediately exit the game using the lower left 'Exit' button. This triggers the game's automatic clean up routine, which can help resolve some file corruption issues. Then launch the game and test again.

That fixed my crashing @ 34% with a stock install. I am reinstalling my OS tonight so I will see what I can do with a fresh install of Windows and if it will work without any programs with mods. Thanks!

Okay so the reinstall is done and i found my problem being that none of the programs that expanded the memory would work with me for some reason. I used the program called "4GB Patcher" and it works fine! So thanks everyone, it finally works. :)
